Lawn, Tree, & Shrub Care Tips

Practical advice for watering and mowing your lawn in Lancaster and Berks County.

Hydration is good.

Water it right.

When to Water

The best times are early morning, before 11:00am for at least 20 minutes per area, and after 5:00pm for 20 minutes per area. We do not recommend watering after 7:00pm so everything has a chance to dry and not cause disease.

How Much to Water

Your lawn needs about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall. Water deeply but less often. A deep soaking encourages roots to grow down, while light, frequent watering leads to shallow roots.

Seasonal Frequency

Water more during the hot, dry spells of summer and less in the cooler spring and fall months. Always check the soil first; if it's damp a few inches down, you can wait.

Adjust for Rain

If you get a good, soaking rain, you can skip your next scheduled watering. Use a simple rain gauge to track how much water your lawn receives naturally.

After a Treatment

Follow the specific instructions left by your technician on your door hanger or invoice. Some products need to be watered in, while others should not be.

Signs of Trouble

A lawn that is thirsty will have a greyish-blue tint, and footprints will remain visible long after you've walked on it. An overwatered lawn may show signs of fungus or have a spongy feel.

Need More Than Just Tips?

If you're seeing issues that watering and mowing can't fix, let's get an expert eye on it. A certified technician can evaluate your property and provide practical recommendations.

Cutting up is good from time to time.

Mowing Tips

How you mow has a big impact on your lawn’s health and appearance. Cutting too short stresses the grass, while proper mowing helps it thrive.

Mower Height

Keep your mower blade set high. A cutting height of 3 to 4 inches is ideal for most of the season. This helps shade the soil, conserve moisture, and crowd out weeds. We do not recommend going any shorter than 3 inches.

The One-Third Rule

Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mowing. If your lawn gets too tall, raise the mower deck for the first pass, then lower it for a second pass a few days later.

Keep Blades Sharp

A sharp mower blade makes a clean cut. Dull blades tear the grass, leaving it bruised and more open to disease.

Avoid Mowing Wet Turf

Mowing a wet lawn can lead to ruts, clumping, and an uneven cut. It's best to wait until the grass has dried.

Leave the Clippings

If the clippings are short, leave them on the lawn. This practice, called mulching, returns valuable nutrients to the soil.

Change Your Pattern

Vary your mowing pattern each time to prevent ruts and encourage the grass blades to grow more upright.

Edge with Caution

Be careful when using a string trimmer along concrete edges or tree rings after a weed control application. The treatment can be tracked onto the lawn, causing unintended damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long after a treatment can I water or mow?

Always follow the specific instructions left on your door hanger. As a general rule, wait 24 hours to mow after an application. Watering guidance will vary based on the product used.

What if we get heavy rain right after a treatment?

Most of our products are absorbed quickly and become rainfast within a few hours. A heavy downpour shortly after an application can sometimes reduce effectiveness, but it rarely washes it away completely. If you have concerns, just give us a call.

Can I seed and still follow the program?

Yes, but timing is important. We can adjust your program to support new seeding. Let us know your plans in advance so we can apply the right products that won't interfere with germination.

How soon can kids and pets go on the lawn after a treatment?

For most applications, the lawn is safe for people and pets once the treatment has dried completely. We will always leave specific instructions regarding re-entry times on your service summary.
